University of Iowa College of Pharmacy Executive Leadership Board member, Dennis Helling, will receive the 2013 Remington Honor Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). He will be officially recognized during the APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in Los Angeles, March 1-4, 2013. 

Helling was selected in recognition of the professional achievements, innovations and advancements he has contributed to the pharmacy profession. These programs include being an active voice in clinical services and creating nationally and internationally recognized pharmacy services that cover hundreds of thousands of lives. Helling developed new practice models for today’s competitive marketplace, creating an organization where clinical pharmacy is an indispensable ingredient of its success.

Helling recently retired as Executive Director of Pharmacy Operations and Therapeutics for Kaiser Permanente in Denver, Colo. where he employed over 800 staff at 29 pharmacies emphasizing expanded roles for pharmacists and ambulatory clinical pharmacy services. Helling’s practice emphasis and research have been focused on documenting the impact pharmacists have on improving patient outcomes and the costs of health care. Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, Helling served as a faculty member and division head of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy at the UI College of Pharmacy.
