Identity Finder Instructions for Windows
Identity Finder is installed on all computers in the College, and is used for scanning files on your computer, network drive(s), and email to identify, protect, and if necessary, remove potentially sensitive data, including SSNs and credit card numbers.
Identity Finder is only available for the Windows operating system. Macintosh users can use Identity Finder through Virtual Desktop to scan their computers for sensitive personal information. Instructions for Mac OS are available on our site at http://pharmacy.uiowa.edu/it/identity-finder-mac.
1. Go to the Start menu and choose Identity Finder from the Programs list (Macintosh users should already have Identity Finder started). If prompted to create or enter a Profile password, click Skip
2. On Identity Finder Search Wizard, click Start Search Now.
3. Once the scan is complete, several options pop up. Click Wizard
Identity Finder will identify patterns similar to Social Security numbers, credit cards, and passwords. It is better to find files which can be ignored than to miss some sensitive data. More information on identifying false positives and what to do with them can be found on the ITS Website at http://its.uiowa.edu/support/article/1944
If Identity Finder did find any personal data, go through the steps on Removing Sensitive Data below.
4. After identifying all locations Identity Finder found and removing all sensitive data, click start in the upper-left corner to run a second time.
What to do with finished report
Once scanning is complete and you have addressed any issues found in the report, please email Julia Woodiwiss at email@example.com with your computer ID (COP Number), and stating that you have completed the scan.
Removing Sensitive Data
If Identity Finder did find real Social Security numbers, credit cards, etc., please visit the ITS Website at http://its.uiowa.edu/support/article/1942 for information on how to best remove sensitive data from your computer.
After removing sensitive data, run Identity Finder again following the same steps as before. Check found items to make sure all sensitive data has been removed.
If you are required to keep sensitive data on your computer for work purposes, please contact the Pharmacy IT Help Desk at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling (319) 335-8649.
