Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics Curriculum

In your first two years as a Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics graduate student, you will be participating in on-going research and completing coursework.  In the third year, emphasis is placed on developing your dissertation research topic.  The fourth and fifth years of the program are spent doing research and writing your dissertation.

Requirements for PhD

Students must take at least 74 total sh.

CORE Competencies (21 sh)

Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics (9 sh)
Students are required to take these courses before taking the Core Competency Qualifying Exam

  • 174:200 Introduction to Health Care Organization and Policy (or equivalent)
  • 046:263 Models of Patient Choice & Behavior
    046:264 Models of Provider Choice & Behavior

Research Methods and Statistics (12 sh)
Students are required to take these courses before taking the Core Competency Exam

  • 046:147 Introduction to Research Methods
  • 9 sh of Statistics, (may be taking in Biostatistics, Economics, Education Psychology, Mathematics, or Sociobiology)

Specialty (at least 24 sh)

With the guidance of their faculty advisor, students develop a plan of study that encompasses an area of expertise, or a specialty. The specialty area must be comprised of at leats 24 sh, and should include course work.

Additional Requirements

Seminar (1 sh per semester)

Students are required to take the Seminar in Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics (46:213) each semester they are on campus, excluding summer.

Research Experience

Students are expected to participate in specific aspects of ongoing research in the PSE program. These research activities often are part of paid graduate research assistantships. In addition, course credit may be obtained for specific research activities in conjunction with HSR faculty members. Course credit cannot be obtained for research activities performed under paid graduate research assistantships. By their third year in the program, students are expected to present the results from one completed research project at a regional or national meeting.

Principles of Scholarly Integrity (650:270)

This course needs to be completed before graduation with a PhD This requirement is currently setup as a two year course. The program is laid out as follows: a four hour introductory orientation workshop followed by eight bi-monthly workshops over two academic years.

 

Requirements for the Master of Science Degree

Students must take at least 36 sh and not more than 9 hours can be thesis or project research credits.

Required Prerequisite Courses

  • 046:129 Pharmaceutical Economics and Insurance must be audited in the first semester they are taught during the student's residence. Exceptions will be made for students with similar course work or experience. All students will be required to know the contents of these courses for comprehensive examinations.
