The 2014 fall semester is officially underway, and the College of Pharmacy has been fortunate to launch the new school year by welcoming its new students in style. On Friday, August 22, the college welcomed 16 new graduate students from around the world and the U.S. On Saturday, August 23, 108 first year Doctor of Pharmacy students were welcomed to the profession of pharmacy.

The college’s new graduate students represent myriad backgrounds, both educational and geographic. Hailing from Iraq to Brazil, and New York to South Dakota, each one brings a unique skill set to the program they have joined. Nine of the 16 students are enrolled in the pharmaceutics program, five in medicinal and natural products chemistry, and two in pharmaceutical socioeconomics. On Friday, a welcome reception was held, with remarks from Associate Dean Michael Duffel and Dean Donald Letendre.

The Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) class of 2018 was busy with orientation activities in the days leading up to the annual Welcome to the Profession Ceremony. They were briefed on the policies of the college, paired with mentors, and grouped into Professional Outreach Development Societies (PODS). The culmination of all this activity was the ceremony on Saturday, when they were formally welcomed to the college and the profession of pharmacy.

During the ceremony, Dean Donald Letendre charged the students with four tasks: to get involved, work together, enjoy themselves, and get to know their colleagues. With hard work, determination, and dedication, these students will be in the same ballroom in four years with degrees conferred, ready to be a part of the pharmacy profession.
