Korey Kennelty, PharmD, MS, PhD, joined the College of Pharmacy as an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science, Division of Health Services Research, last month. Kennelty is an alum of the University of Wisconsin, and joins the college after completing an advanced geriatrics fellowship at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wis. Her research primarily examines patients’ medication continuity when they transition from the hospital to community care. She also plans to work with Professor Barry Carter, PharmD, in studying roles of pharmacists in managing chronic conditions.

She is excited to join the college, saying, “I wanted to collaborate with Barry Carter and others at the University of Iowa as well as belong to a top flight research and academic institution. “

In addition to conducting research, she will be teaching on topics including quality and process improvement, and team-based care models. Kennelty is an active committee member for the Gerontological Society of America, focusing on medication use in older adults, medication reconciliation in the outpatient setting, and OTC sleep aids.

She enjoys mentoring students, residents (pharmacy, medical, nursing), and graduate students, and is passionate about decreasing health system fragmentation for vulnerable patient populations. Her work has focused on developing and implementing effective medication reconciliation strategies when patients transition between the healthcare settings as well as developing and disseminating practical team-based care approaches into outpatient primary care settings.

Kennelty and her husband are also avid backpackers and plan to backpack the John Muir Trail (210 miles) someday!
