Peter Veng-Pedersen, University of Iowa College of Pharmacy professor of pharmaceutics and translational therapeutics, is working with John Widness, UI professor of pediatrics to test a novel alternative for delivering red blood cells to preterm infants. The team, led by Widness, is using discarded blood along with sophisticated computer models to predict how a non-invasive hormonal treatment could stimulate red blood cell production and alleviate the need for transfusions.
