When Analisa Iole isn’t studying to be a medication expert, she’s leading the Hawkeye Marching Band.

Iole, a first-year Doctor of Pharmacy student, is in her second season as drum major. When Iole took over mid-season last year as drum major for Issac Anderson—who left for military training—she became the first woman since World War II to be a drum major, according to a news article in IowaNow. This fall, she began the PharmD program at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy student, which makes her the college’s first drum major in modern times.

Iole—who is from the clarinet section—is a 2014 graduate of Marshalltown High School where she also served as a drum major.

“I am having the time of my life leading the Hawkeye Marching Band. There’s nothing like pumping out enthusiasm and energy to the crowd by way of the band and having it come back to us. Also as a first-year pharmacy student, I’ve been able to apply the discipline I’ve learned into preparing to be a healthcare professional,” Iole commented.
