As health professionals await revisions of the blood pressure and cholesterol guidelines, CoraLynn Trewet, MS, PharmD, BCPS, Associate Professor (Clinical) at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, anticipates a “huge role” for pharmacists. Trewet is the American Pharmacists Association representative to the National Program to Reduce Cardiovascular Risk Coordinating Committee, which is working on the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute guidelines.

In the January 2012 issue of Pharmacy Today, Trewet provides insight to the role of the committee, as well as the impact the new guidelines will have on pharmacists. She said the committee will “make sure we have one common message and one common goal as the guidelines are released.”

Furthermore, Trewet explained that the pharmacist’s role will consist of two parts – medication therapy and patient care.
