As part of the rotation at the Iowa City VA Medical Center’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, students work with Brett Heintz, PharmD, BCPS-ID. They participate in both inpatient care (prospective audit and feedback) and outpatient care (retrospective review with feedback). Students also attend committee meetings, round with microbiology professionals, complete special infectious disease/antimicrobial stewardship projects/research and provide in-services/education. Students are given opportunities to apply what they learn in the classroom to patient care.
In addition to gaining clinical skills and expending their infectious disease knowledge, students document patient care plans in the medical record and communicate with providers. Using an evidenced-based approach instills confidence in students and facilitates professional growth.
