The Acute Care rotation at the VA Medical Center with Clinical Assistant Professor Shannon Heintz, PharmD, focuses on the care and pharmacotherapy issues associated with surgical patients and those patients who are listed and have received a kidney transplant. The medicine rotation provides the student with the opportunity to practice pharmaceutical care in a multidisciplinary setting. Daily surgery rounds provide an environment to interact with other health care professionals and influence patient care. In this rotation, students’ time is divided between various surgical services at the VA Medical Center. Students are exposed to multiple disease states relevant to the pre- and post-operative care of a surgical patient. Daily discussions with the preceptor or physicians focus on issues pertinent to the surgical and kidney transplant population.
