As part of the rotation in University of Iowa Health Care’s Family Medicine Clinic, students work with Michael Ernst, ’97 PharmD, and participate in both outpatient care and inpatient rounds for the department that sees approximately 45,000 outpatient visits annually. Care is provided across a diverse spectrum of age and health. The department staffs one of the general medicine inpatient services in the hospital, with an average daily census around 12 patients. One student summarized their experience and growth throughout the rotation, saying, “Dr. Ernst often encouraged us to apply what we had just learned and to build off what we know. This helped with my confidence, and I became more comfortable making suggestions to the medical team. Overall, this rotation helped me with my communication, clinical, and analytical skills."
