For more than 125 years, the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy has led the way in educating pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. The college is well known for its high-quality pharmacy education, advanced practice models, patient care, drug discovery, product development, and contract manufacturing.  Now is the time for the college to reach for even greater heights! With a new, state-of-the-art building, Iowa pharmacy can continue to deliver a contemporary pharmacy education and prepare its graduates to be the health care leaders and scientists of the future.

The new College of Pharmacy building is a reality, in part, because of generous alumni and friends.  This unwavering support has been - and will continue to be - instrumental in sustaining and growing the college's tradition of excellence as one of the nation's elite pharmacy schools.

Core values in designing the building include:

  • Education First.
    • The need for a new facility begins with students.  In 2015, the College began implementing a new, trend-setting PharmD curriculum.  Students cannot realize the full potential of this curriculum in our current facility.  The active learning component and student-led learning require flexible classrooms for small groups and collaboration.  The new building will provide ample space for this kind of learning.
  • Science and Discovery.
    • The college has an extraordinary program of science and discovery. Faculty are currently limited not because of their creativity and scientific ability -- they are limited simply because of physical space. In this new facility, those limitations will no longer exist.
  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
    • Iowa has had a long-standing history of entrepreneurship and innovation.  Some of the most cutting edge practice innovations find their roots in Iowa.  This new facility will provide spaces to collect the wisdom of individuals, brainstorm new ideas, and be able to explore in a conceptual manner and begin to implement new ideas.  A good example is the expansion of compounding and manufacturing of sterile products as part of the UI Pharmaceuticals enterprise.  Another dimension will lead to providing incubator space to look at new and innovative ways of patient care delivery.
  • Commitment to Inclusivity.
    • The new facility will feature a design aspect termed Universal Design, aimed at inclusivity.  Universal Design is the design and composition of an environment so that it can be accessed, understood, and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability, or disability.  This will be the first health sciences educational facility built in the United States that has embraced Universal Design since its inception.
  • Fostering Community.
    • The new building will exude a spirit of community.  Spaces have been designed to help build community unlike any of our alumni have ever witnessed before.
