With a 15-year track record, The University of Iowa was an easy choice for completing a Community Pharmacy Residency. The depth of experience in resident development, research mentorship, and practice innovation was evident from the first introduction through the final interview. Iowa pharmacists have set themselves apart nationally as leaders in community pharmacy advancement, and I wanted to be a part of this movement. Each resident is encouraged to take an active role in the Iowa Pharmacists Association, providing opportunities for growth in practice management and professional advocacy. The residency program includes six sites, offering ample support from peers and mentors alike. I specifically chose Osterhaus Pharmacy because the personal values behind their patient care philosophy closely match my own. Along with the owners, the entire staff is dedicated to quality patient care, improved patient outcomes, and comprehensive clinical thinking. The Osterhaus family of pharmacists has long been a leading example of excellence. With a president-elect for the American Pharmacists Association, past-presidents of the Iowa Pharmacists Association, and numerous local and state board appointments, the entire team is capable of affecting my development as a leader in the profession. Along with the patient care aspect, the teaching opportunities, including didactic and practical, are extensive, preparing me for a career in academia. Overall, the director, preceptors, and support-staff are dedicated and flexible, allowing me to create an effective strategy for a productive year and successful future as a community pharmacist.
