Mercy Medical Center (MMC) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is currently recruiting pharmacist interns to assist the pharmacy department in operational and clinical aspects of pharmacy practice. Mercy Medical Center utilizes a “tiered” internship program. The purpose of the tiered program is to allow pharmacy students to integrate practical experiences with clinical knowledge. Examples of the interns’ responsibilities are listed in the table below. Applicants Sought Mercy Medical Center is seeking to hire four interns who are currently in their second professional year and two interns currently in their first professional year. Requirements: P1 & P2 Interns must be available to work (on average) 8-16 hours (1-2 shifts) per pay period (2 weeks). This may include working up to every 3rd weekend. P2 interns will begin staffing P3 intern medication education shifts after the completion of their Spring P2 year coursework. P3 Interns must be available to work a minimum of 8-12 hours (2-3 shifts) per pay period (2 weeks) and one central shift per month. The planned hours are 4/5p-8/9p Monday-Friday and a 4 hour shift on Saturday (9-1p). During these 4 hour shifts the intern will be responsible for providing medication education to inpatients. Interns assigned to patient education shifts will be responsible for coordinating requests for time off with their peers. MMC will assist in flexing coverage during scheduled University of Iowa College of Pharmacy testing blocks. Additional experience opportunities may exist in operational areas of practice. In addition, all interns must be available to work the majority of the winter and summer breaks. Extended time off (> 2 weeks) cannot be accommodated based upon the patient care needs of the organization. Exceptions include IPPE requirements. Interns are also required to work at least one holiday during the year. Minimum hour requirements may vary based on time off requests, the business needs of the organization, and hours the intern may work to gain additional experience in pharmacy practice.
