Mercy Medical Center (MMC) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is currently recruiting pharmacist interns to assist the pharmacy department in operational and clinical aspects of pharmacy practice. Mercy Medical Center plans to implement a “tiered” internship program this Fall. The purpose of the tiered program is to allow pharmacy students to integrate practical experiences with clinical knowledge. Examples of the interns’ responsibilities are listed in the table below.
Fall 2015 P3 Interns must be available to work a minimum of 8-12 hours per pay period (2 weeks). The planned hours are 4p-8p Monday-Friday and a 4 hour shift on Saturday (time TBD). During these 4 hour shifts the intern will be responsible for providing medication education to inpatients. Interns assigned to patient education shifts will be responsible for coordinating requests for time off with their peers. MMC will assist in the coordination of coverage during scheduled University of Iowa College of Pharmacy testing blocks. Additional experience opportunities may exist in operational areas of practice.
Fall 2015 P1 & P2 Interns must be available to work (on average) 8-16 hours per pay period (2 weeks). This may include working up to every 3rd weekend.
In addition, all P1-P3 interns must be available to work the majority of the winter and summer breaks. Extended time off (> 2 weeks) cannot be accommodated based upon the patient care needs of the organization. Interns are also required to work at least one holiday during the year.
Minimum hour requirements may vary based on time off requests, the business needs of the organization, and hours the intern may work to gain additional experience in pharmacy practice.
Mercy Medical Center is seeking to hire five interns who will be entering their 3rd professional year and five interns who will be entering their 2nd professional year. Candidates entering their 1st professional year will also be considered.
