The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy will facilitate a one-day conference to be held on Feb. 5, 2015, in Des Moines, Iowa, to discuss the future of pharmacy technician education in Iowa. Representatives from Iowa’s community colleges and AACP, ACPE, ASHP, APhA, PTCB, IPA, the Iowa State Board of Pharmacy, and other organizations have been invited to provide multiple perspectives on issues involving pharmacy technician education and certification. The summit will be an initial step in discussing plans regarding pharmacy technician program development, describe current accreditation standards, identify gaps in curricula, and discuss barriers to achieving accreditation before 2020, when the requirements for the examination administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board include a provision that all applicants complete an ASHP/ACPE accredited pharmacy technician education program prior to registering for the certification exam.
