Q: What are the course prerequisites for entry into the PharmD program?

Rhetoric: 4 sh
General Chemistry with lab: 8 sh
Calculus: 3 - 4 sh
General Biology with lab: 8 sh
Organic Chemistry: 6 sh
Biochemistry: 3 sh
Human Physiology: 3 - 4 sh
Human Anatomy: 3 sh
Microbiology with lab: 4 sh
Statistics: 3 sh 
Microeconomics: 3 - 4 sh
Physics: 1 year high school or 1 semester college (lab recommended but not required)
General Education Electives: 12 sh

Q: What GPA do you require for admission?
A: The minimum GPA to apply is a 2.50, with a C- or above in all prerequisite courses. 

Q: What are the application procedures?
A: You must apply using PharmCAS, and submit official transcripts, two letters of reference, and optional PCAT scores directly to PharmCAS. Scores from any January PCAT will be accepted for that year's fall admission. Students will then be required to interview.

Q: When is the application deadline?
A: The deadline for admission is early January.

Q: When will I find out if I’ve been accepted?
A: Candidates are notified of admission as decisions are made by the Admissions Committee, typically within 2 -3 weeks after their interview.

Q: How many students are enrolled in the program each year?
A: Approximately 100 - 120 students are enrolled each Fall.

Q: How many students apply each year?
A: We receive approximately 300-350 applications per year.

Q: Do you accept transfer and out-of-state students?
A: Yes. We do not give preference to in-state or University of Iowa Students. Read transfer information here.

Q: Do you accept international students?
A: Yes. Applicants should complete at least one year (i.e., 30 semester hours) of prerequisites at an accredited institution in the U.S. or Canada. Credits from an institution outside the U.S. or Canada must be determined through an evaluation prepared by World Education Services (WES). This evaluation can be requested through the PharmCAS application. Applicants must meet the University of Iowa's English Proficiency Requirements.

A: Our retention rate is very high as we select students who are well-prepared for the rigorous curriculum. PharmD Excellence Indicators

Q: What percent of students pass their licensure exams?
A: For the past 5 years, our students have had a 94% passing rate on all licensure exams.
