Biography

Mr. Ponto earned his BS Pharm from the University of Iowa in 1977 and his MS in Radiopharmacy from the University of Southern California in 1978. He is Board Certified in Nuclear Pharmacy and has a primary appointment as Chief Nuclear Pharmacist in the Department of Radiology, Division of Nuclear Medicine in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. In his practitioner role, he is responsible for directing the administrative, operational, and professional activities of UIHC’s nuclear pharmacy lab.
Mr. Ponto is an active member of professional organizations, notably the American Pharmacists Association's Nuclear Pharmacy Section and the Society of Nuclear Medicine. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Nuclear Pharmacies amd on the Board of Directors of the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. He is also currently serving on the United Stated Pharmacopeia' Chemical Medicines Monographs 4 Expert Committee.
Mr. Ponto has received several honors and awards, including Fellow of the American Pharmaceutical Association, Fellow of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists, the Distinguished Achievement Award in Nuclear Pharmacy Practice (APhA), and the Daniel B. Smith Practice Excellence Award (APhA).

Mr. Ponto's research interests involve quality aspects of radiopharmaceuticals and participation in clinical trials of investigational radiopharmaceuticals

Clinical Narrative

Mr. Ponto is Board Certified in Nuclear Pharmacy and has a primary appointment as Chief Nuclear Pharmacist in the Department of Radiology, Division of Nuclear Medicine in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. In his practitioner role, he is responsible for directing the administrative, operational, and professional activities of UIHC’s nuclear pharmacy lab. Routine tasks include the ordering, receiving, storage, preparation, quality control testing, dispensing, and disposal of radiopharmaceuticals and related drugs and supplies. He also provides both didactic and experiential instruction to nuclear medicine technology students, radiology and nuclear medicine residents, and others. He is an active participant in the varied and diverse research efforts relating to radiopharmaceuticals, notably clinical trials.
