Matthew Witry earned his PharmD and PhD in Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics from the University of Iowa, where he also received a certificate in College Teaching from the College of Education. Witry currently is an assistant professor in the department of Health Services Research at the College. Witry collaborates with colleagues at College of Nursing, the VA CADRE group, the Iowa Pharmacy Association, the Northeast Iowa Medical Education Foundation, and others. In addition, Witry works with the UI community pharmacy residency program, graduate students, and student pharmacists on a variety of research projects.
Dr. Witry’s research focuses on service and communication quality in the community pharmacy setting. This includes the nature of pharmacist-patient communication, pharmacist processes for monitoring the safety and effectiveness of medications. Recent research focuses on understanding pharmacist role perceptions in the refill process, including perspectives and approaches to improving medication adherence. Witry also is examining pharmacists engagement in mental health crisis intervention.
