Bruce Alexander
Introduction
I joined the Iowa City VA Health Care System (ICVAHCS) in July 1976 as a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in Psychiatry and Assistant Professor (Clinical) in the College of Pharmacy and the Department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine, The University of Iowa. My clinical work was in inpatient psychiatry with a consultative practice in outpatient mental health where I served as a preceptor for ambulatory care pharmacy residents and as a project collaborator. In the College of Pharmacy I taught senior pharmacy students on clerkship and coordinated as well as lectured in the neuropsychiatry therapeutic module for 3rd year pharmacy students. I retired from the College of Pharmacy in 2008. For the College of Medicine I lectured to medical students and psychiatry residents, co-coordinating a 9-month course on psychopharmacotherapeutics for the Department of Psychiatry and taught mental health therapeutics in the College of Nursing for 10 years. As the VISN 23 Mental Health Pharmacoepidemiologist I developed therapeutic and economic projects for the service line. In December 2011 I assumed the role of Associate Chief, Clinical Programs for Pharmacy Service at the ICVAHCS where I managed 17 pharmacy specialists and 3 health care technicians that work in the areas of anticoagulation, lipid management, geriatrics, home-based primary care, patient-aligned care teams, oncology, mental health, inpatient medicine, and surgery/transplant. I retired from VA service in November 2013. In January 2014 I began my work as a contract data manager for ICVAHCS Department of Research. My research interests include psychotropic pharmacokinetics, PTSD pharmacotherapeutics, and the impact of academic detailing and the mental health dashboard on prescribing practices.
I have a strong background in database development (Access®) and data management utilizing SQL and visual basic programming languages. I have experience developing PowerBI® and Reporting Services® dashboards.
