The Pain Management and Palliative Care PGY2 Pharmacy Residency has been newly accredited for the next four years by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).

The program began in 2017 and is administered through the UI College of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science. Key preceptors are Clinical Associate Professor James Ray, the James A. Otterbeck OnePoint Patient Care Professor in Hospice and Palliative Care; Kashelle Lockman, a clinical assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy and clinical pharmacy specialist in the outpatient palliative care clinic at UI Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC); and Lee Kral, a clinical pharmacy specialist at UIHC.

There have been two residents to date—both with PharmD degrees—Eva Coulson, who began in the summer of 2017; and Jennifer Ku, who began in 2018.

The program embeds the resident pharmacist—who is in their second postgraduate residency year—within the interdisciplinary UIHC palliative care team. There, they train with physician fellows in hospice and palliative medicine. The resident pharmacists emerge as experts in pain management, palliative care, and hospice skilled in working on interprofessional teams. They provide compassionate clinical care to patients, as well as enriching Iowa healthcare with innovative education, research, and progressive leadership in their fields.
