Michael Ernst, UI College of Pharmacy clinical professor of Pharmacy Practice and Science and family medicine, has received the Russell R. Miller Award from the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. The prestigious honor is in recognition of substantial contributions to the literature of clinical pharmacy, thereby advancing both clinical pharmacy practice and rational pharmacotherapy. At the time of his nomination, Ernst had written more than 80 original publications, 40 review articles, and 20 book chapters.
Nominator Eric MacLaughlin, professor and chair of Pharmacy Practice at Texas Tech University, said, "Dr. Ernst's research and scholarship have been highly relevant in the field of clinical pharmacy and hypertension, considering the decades-long debate regarding the “optimal” thiazide diuretic clinicians should use to treat high blood pressure. His scholarship has been foundational in the recommendations provided in national guidelines for high blood pressure."
Michelle Fravel, UI College of Pharmacy clinical associate professor, elaborated, "Dr. Ernst is currently a member of the ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) Investigator group. ASPREE is a long-term, multicenter, binational study of aspirin and health in older adults. Notably, Dr. Ernst is the only pharmacist serving as a principal site investigator for ASPREE, among 10 other physician-investigators. In 2018, the ASPREE investigators group published three landmark trials in the New England Journal of Medicine, one of which was listed among the journal’s Notable articles of 2018."
