Throughout his more than 15 years with the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, Sean Geary has made lasting impacts as an assistant research scientist and lab manager. Yet he still approaches his work with an eye for improvement.
In recognition of all he does for the college, Geary was named this year’s College of Pharmacy Staff of the Year Award honoree. The accolade recognizes a staff member who demonstrates a commitment to excellence through an outstanding set of accomplishments and contributions that significantly benefit the college.
In his current position, Geary holds a wide variety of responsibilities. He prepares grants, develops research directions, mentors students, and oversees lab safety and compliance. Despite the workload, he always goes above and beyond.
“What distinguishes Dr. Geary most clearly is the sustained and cumulative impact of his work,” said Bighley Chair and Professor Aliasger Salem, whose lab Geary manages. “His contributions are not limited to individual projects or short-term successes; they have shaped the long-term trajectory of our research program and strengthened the College of Pharmacy’s reputation for excellence in translational and interdisciplinary research.”is Hi
Due to Geary’s efforts, the College of Pharmacy boasts multiple high-impact publications, patents, and a full portfolio of externally funded projects in which he took part. His role in grant development and execution is a large reason why. He routinely assists in every step of the process and particularly shines in proposal writing.
“Dr. Geary contributes to grant writing at a level commensurate with principal investigators (PI) and, in several cases, serves as a PI or co-PI himself,” said nominator Jonathan Doorn, Lach Chair and professor.
When he’s not occupied with impressive research or grants, you can find Geary doing equally important but often overlooked work: overseeing the lab.
It’s easier said than done. It takes a lot to keep a lab running smoothly, but Geary has no problem handling it. He supervises lab safety, protocol development, regulatory compliance, personnel training, and day-to-day operations. He continuously takes it a step further by continuously refining lab systems to be as effective as possible.
His nominators noted his proactiveness and foresight have created sustainable lab practices that benefit the college’s research ecosystem, including Salem’s students whom Geary is determined to help succeed.
“I have consistently observed his deep engagement with graduate students, his rigorous yet constructive approach to scientific training, and his willingness to invest substantial time mentoring students well beyond formal expectations,” said Doorn.
For many, Geary is a steadfast source of support. From day-to-day advice to serving on thesis committees, he guides students during their time at the college and maintains contact after their graduation.
“Many of our trainees credit Dr. Geary as a key influence in their scientific development and professional success,” said Salem.
As the recipient of this year’s Staff of the Year Award, it’s clear that Geary doesn’t just influence the students. His hard work has been felt across departments, and the whole college has reason to say thank you.
