SHPEP Student 2024 Measuring

The College of Pharmacy is currently educating six students through the pharmacy track of the UI The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP), June 9 – July 20. This free, six-week summer enrichment program is focused on improving access to information and resources for undergraduate students interested in health professions.

"The SHPEP program is always a highlight of my summer. It's so rewarding to get to know these outstanding scholars and watch as they explore all areas of pharmacy,” said Liz Davis, director of admissions at the College of Pharmacy. “They have tremendous growth in their skills, knowledge, and passion during the six weeks and it's an honor for the College to be a part of that process."

Pharmacy-track students are hearing about pharmacy career paths and the academic experiences that led professionals to their chosen career. Sessions have included community pharmacy, nuclear pharmacy, psychiatric pharmacy, clinical pharmacy, research, and more.

Our scholars are also learning about the College’s application process, meeting with faculty mentors, visiting area pharmacies to observe pharmacists’ roles, and talking with current Doctor of Pharmacy students. They also got to test their lab skills by:

  • compounding under the guidance of College Genesis Board member Pamela Wiltfang (’12 PharmD) of Amgen
  • counting pills (Mike and Ike candy)
  • making lip balm and bug soother
  • punching capsules with cornstarch

Supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students from economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds and those with demonstrated interest in issues affecting underserved populations to prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. Iowa is one of 12 participating universities. Students who complete the UI pharmacy track are guaranteed an admissions interview.

We hope this summer’s terrific group of students will one day be PharmHawks!
