The 2025-26 academic year has taken off and the college has welcomed 119 first-year Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students and five graduate students pursuing their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
Making History
Following Engagement Week, during which PharmD students get to know classmates and faculty, and learn tips for studying, finances, ways to get involved, and more, the class of 2029 gathered for its Welcome to the Profession White Coat ceremony at UI’s Hancher Auditorium.
“Today marks the beginning of a transformative journey — one that connects you to a proud legacy and propels you toward a future of impact,” Jill Kolesar, dean, Schmidt chair, and professor told students.
Marilyn Osterhaus, ’80 BSPh, delivered the keynote address, asking students if they were ready to make history. She is active in local, state, and national pharmacy associations and has held a variety of pharmacy leadership positions. “I encourage you to connect with this new team surrounding you to minimize stress and maximize success,” Osterhaus said.
Several representatives from state and national organizations were on hand, including Iowa Pharmacy Association President-Elect Heather Ourth. Ourth told students “know you are joining a profession that is proud of you and invested in your success,” she said.
PhD Pursuit
Five graduate students seeking their PhD degree participated in orientation the week prior to classes beginning, getting to know the building, UI medical campus, meeting faculty, and more. Each of the College of Pharmacy’s graduate areas welcomed at least one student. Lilly Duff, Zebulon Gnida, and Dana Sorensen entered the Drug Discovery and Experimental Therapeutics program; Divya Bande joined the Pharmaceutics program; and Gosia Clore is pursuing Health Services Research.
When asked why she chose the UI College of Pharmacy, Bande said, “A strong reputation in drug delivery and formulation science. The program’s structure and the supportive departmental culture felt like the right environment for my professional growth.”
