Admission Criteria

Applications are accepted throughout the year and decisions are based on completed application materials, including quality and quantity of work experience and undergraduate, professional, or graduate academic performance. College of Pharmacy students must complete the Leadership Certificate application, pay the application fee, and meet the admission requirements at the time of their application.

Admissions requirements for full-time PharmD students:

  1. an earned undergraduate degree or have completed 120 credit hours of undergraduate or professional degree credits if in the PharmD Program, and
  2. meet or exceed the minimum required undergraduate grade point average,
  3. meet English language requirements set by the Tippie College of Business, visit English Requirements for MBA Admission here

Early application by the Priority Deadline is recommended! The Priority Deadlines are typically in February (for summer), March (for fall), and October (for spring).

Course equivalents for PharmD students

Substitute for MBA:8120:  Completion of three semester hours of MGMT:8000 Healthcare Business Leadership from the Healthcare Business Leadership Program will serve as a substitute for MBA:8120 Management in Organizations

Approved certificate electives:  Up to three hours of credit from the list below may be counted toward the elective requirement within the Leadership Certificate program:

  • Leadership and Political Advocacy (PHAR:8721)
  • Leaders Read (PHAR:8509)
  • Hospital Pharmacy Practice Management Elective (PHAR:8724)
  • Sustainable Clinical Pharmacy Services: Leadership, Management, and Implementation (PHAR:8790)

A grade of C- or better is required, and the course must be no more than 10 years old at the time the certificate is earned and conferred.  

Tuition

Tuition for Leadership Certificate students is determined by the Professional MBA program-specific fee at the time the course is taken. This fee is charged in addition to PharmD Program tuition charges. Estimated total out-of-pocket expense for 2022-2023 is between $6,870 to $11,250.  Scholarships are available to assist with costs.

Professional Certificates and the Iowa MBA

The Leadership Certificate (15 semester hours) can be transferred into the Iowa MBA program (45 semester hours), subject to the student’s separate application and acceptance into the MBA program under the requirements in place at that time.  Courses may only be counted toward an MBA degree if they were completed within 10 years of the semester the MBA degree is to be conferred.
