Biography

Deanna L. McDanel, PharmD, BCPS, BCACP Dr. McDanel is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Ambulatory Care at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC). Dr. McDanel obtained this position after graduating with a PharmD degree from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in 2001. Dr. McDanel subsequently completed an ASHP-Accredited Specialized Residency in Primary Care at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 2002. She has been a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist since 2004 and a Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist since 2012. Her current clinical practice sites include the Anticoagulation and Drug Allergy. She also serves as a member of the faculty for the Division of Immunology at UIHC. Dr. McDanel shares a joint appointment as a Clinical Associate Professor with the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. She started as a clinical professor in 2002. Over the years she has had the opportunity to teach hundreds of student pharmacists in numerous formats, including didactic lecturing, laboratory instruction, team-based facilitation, and experiential training in both Introductory and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences. Dr. McDanel, along with her ambulatory care practice colleagues, received recognition as Faculty Preceptors of the Year in 2008. She was honored with the 2015 National Master Preceptor of the year award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. She was also honored with the College of Pharmacy Teacher of the Year award for the second year professional students in 2012, 2016, and 2023. In 2007, Dr. McDanel began her role as the Residency Program Director of the PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency at UIHC. She also served as a coordinator of the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency for residents in the ambulatory care setting from 2007-2021. She has served as a preceptor to over 55 pharmacy residents in the ambulatory care clinics at UIHC. Dr. McDanel strives to advance her practice through scholarly work and professional presentations. She also maintains active membership within a number of pharmacy organizations and serves in leadership positions at collegiate, institutional and professional organization levels. As recognition of her work she was honored with the Genesis Alumni Award from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in 2016.
