What is a Flag?

A flag is an “incident” during an examination where the AI detects potential behaviors of concern based on eye movements, body movements, sounds, and objects in view.

What should I do BEFORE my exam begins to minimize ExamMonitor flags?

Please do the following before you begin your exam:

  • Remove ALL unauthorized materials and equipment from your test-taking space (e.g., textbooks, notes, etc.).
  • Use the restroom.
  • Turn off and put away your cell phone and all other devices.
  • Remove any headphones/headsets/earbuds.
What should I do DURING my examination session to minimize flags?

To reduce the potential of being flagged during your exam, you should:

  • Avoid interacting with or speaking to others who may enter the room.
  • Avoid prohibited behaviors such as using notes or resources, communicating with others, or taking pictures of exam content.
  • Avoid talking (including reading questions out loud).
  • Make sure nothing obscures the camera’s view of you.
  • Remain focused on your exam and computer screen as much as possible.
  • Stay in your seat until the examination is complete.
My video always seems dark when I am in Zoom meetings. Could this be a problem with ExamMonitor?

Yes. The camera must be able to clearly “see” you. Often, when a window is behind you, the video will appear dark. Placing a light source in front of you will help resolve this. If you continue to have difficulty, you may wish to arrange to take your exams in a secure, well-lit campus location.

What should I do if there is an emergency or other issue that requires my attention and triggers a flag?

We understand that taking examinations at home is not always the ideal testing environment. If something occurs that would trigger a flag, such as a child interrupting you or your phone ringing, complete the Exam Session Incident Report form to notify the Assessment & Accreditation Manager. This information will be considered during any subsequent review.

My home is noisy. Can I wear earplugs during an exam?

You may use foam earplugs. You must clearly show them to the camera before putting them in your ears. Earbuds, headphones, headsets, and other similar devices are prohibited.

What happens if I must get up to use the bathroom during a proctored exam?

If you get up to use the bathroom, ExamMonitor will flag the instance for review. We recommend using the bathroom before your exam begins but understand the need to take a bathroom break may arise during a lengthy exam. If you must leave the exam, note the time and submit an Exam Session Incident Report form afterward.

Will I automatically be penalized if ExamMonitor flags something in my exam session?

No. Flag reports and associated videos are reviewed by a proctor and/or the Assessment & Accreditation Manager. Only credible academic integrity concerns are subject to penalties.

What is the post-examination proctoring process?

Trained proctors review examination flags and associated videos. If the proctor identifies a probable academic integrity concern, they report it to the Assessment & Accreditation Manager for a secondary review. If a credible academic integrity concern is affirmed, the Assessment & Accreditation Manager reports it to the Associate Deans of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs for consideration by the Honor Council.

As part of the quality assurance process or based on a specific report of suspected misconduct, the Assessment & Accreditation Manager may conduct the initial review.

How long are examination recordings kept?

Recordings will be kept for no more than one year. In the event of academic misconduct, videos may be archived as part of the official record.
