Cynthia Okafor, PhD Student
Why did you choose Iowa?
“As an international student arriving in the United States for the first time, I chose Iowa for its simpler-paced society, allowing me to comfortably adjust to academic and research work while embracing the beauty of my new environment. Iowa's reputation for "Iowa-Nice" is well-deserved, as the University of Iowa campus has proven to be exceptionally friendly and safe, fostering a culture of kindness and helpfulness among staff, students, and visitors.”
Why did you choose the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy?
“The UI College of Pharmacy stood out to me initially for its cutting-edge and collaborative research environment. The dedication of professors to nurturing students' curiosity and innovation is evident as they actively encourage the exploration of new ideas.
The strong mentorship system, reinforced through seminars and events, ensures students receive ample support to produce high-quality results. Personally, the support and trust shown by my PI, Dr. Aliasger Salem, who entrusted me with two engaging research projects from my first year, have been invaluable.”
Tell me about your pharmacy interests/research.
“Currently, I'm developing a biosensor aimed at benefiting dental patients, drawing passion from my extensive experience as a frequent dental patient since my childhood.
Additionally, my second project aligns with the research legacy of George Washington Carver, aiming to meet human needs with things that grow, only this time with Biosciences instead.
It's a privilege to utilize my skills and knowledge to contribute positively to humanity, fulfilling my lifelong aspiration to make a meaningful impact.”
