As we prepare to begin a new academic year, the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy is pleased to announce the class Teachers of the Year for the 2016-2017 academic year. The Teacher of the Year is the student-nominated award for recognizing outstanding faculty.
Jeffrey Reist, Class of 2020 Teacher of the Year
Jeff Reist, ’82 BSPh, PharmD, is a clinical associate professor and director of the Pharmacy Practice Laboratory at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. He maintains a practice site as the clinical pharmacist on the interprofessional team at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Family Medicine Geriatric Clinic. He is board certified as a pharmacotherapy specialist by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Iowa, and his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. Prior to returning teach at the University of Iowa in 2003, Reist practiced in hospital, community and long-term care pharmacy practices and served as a preceptor to pharmacy students.
Reist's research areas include innovations in teaching and improvement in the care of patients with dementia. He is particularly interested in the appropriate treatment of behavioral symptoms these patients.
Michael Farley, Class of 2019 Teacher of the Year
T. Michael Farley, ’07 PharmD, earned both his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Iowa. He completed a PGY1 general hospital residency at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky, and a PGY2 internal medicine residency at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington. Farley currently practices as a member of the hospitalist team at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City and teaches at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. His practice interests include diabetes, anticoagulation, gastrointestinal and infectious diseases.
Farley has researched and written on pharmacist-physician collaboration and collaborative care models in the community hospital environment. He has also been published in peer-reviewed journals on topics such as novel oral anticoagulants, medication reconciliation, diabetes management and active learning educational techniques. Dr. Farley also has an interest in infectious diseases and coordinates data-review, publishing and P&T committee formulary review of the hospital antibiogram for Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
John Swegle, Class of 2018 Teacher of the Year
John Swegle, ’96 PharmD, is a faculty member and clinical pharmacist for the Mercy Family Medicine Residency in Mason City. The Family Medicine residency is a training program for 18 residents and is affiliated with Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa. The residency program serves as a teaching center for students of various disciplines including medicine, nursing, and pharmacy. His practice area focuses on drug therapy management for patients in the hospital, ambulatory, and nursing home settings. In addition, he works with the Palliative Medicine team and is the clinical pharmacist for Hospice of North Iowa. Swegle serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students and pharmacy practice residents.
Swegle serves as a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Subcommittee and the Institutional Review Board for Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa. He also collaborates with the Palliative Medicine team and serves as a clinical pharmacist for Hospice of North Iowa.
