The UI College of Pharmacy Genesis Alumni Award recognizes graduates from the past 15 years who have achieved early distinction in their field. We are honored to announce the recipients for 2019: Monica Fay-Azhar and Scott M. Hynes. Both will be honored in a ceremony during Homecoming festivities on October 17.

Monica Fay-Azhar, '03 PharmD, MBA

Fay-Azhar is the senior vice president of Global Medical Affairs at Apellis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in the Greater Boston area.

She received an MBA from Capella University in 2008 and a PharmD in 2003 from the University of Iowa. Following her graduation from the UI, Fay-Azhar completed an ambulatory care residency at the William S. Middleton Memorial VA Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. She subsequently took a position within the pharmaceutical industry as a medical science liaison.

Over the past 15 years, she has held roles of increasing leadership and responsibility within the medical affairs functions of various global organizations. Fay-Azhar’s key responsibilities have involved leading the transition of products from pre-approval to post-approval settings, scientific communication, real-world evidence generation, and phase IV studies. She has worked in multiple disease states in neurology, endocrinology, and hematology.

Originally from Atwood, Illinois, Fay-Azhar and her family now reside in the Greater Boston area.

 

Scott M. Hynes, '00 PharmD, PhD

Hynes is currently director of the Global PK/PD and Pharmacometrics Department at Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis, Indiana.

He received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Iowa in 2000, followed by his PhD in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Michigan in 2005. Hynes completed a one-year post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Arizona College of Medicine before joining Eli Lilly and Company in 2006.

During the past 13 years, he has been involved with drug development from early discovery to late phase development and submission. He has received numerous awards within Eli Lilly for his contributions to oncology research and development. Hynes is a member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. He has mentored several PharmD students during industrial pharmacy rotations. He is a registered and licensed pharmacist in Michigan.

In 2017, Hynes spent two weeks in Peru as an international volunteer at a Mother Teresa Missionary of Charity. He also enjoys running, weight training, golf, vacations, and spending time with family.
