On Friday, September 28, the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy held its annual Recognition Reception at the UI Athletics Hall of Fame. Two outstanding alumni were honored with the Distinguished Alumni Awards, and two additional leaders in the profession of pharmacy were presented with the Honorary Alumni Awards. The college also announced its newest honor, the Osterhaus Medal for Lifetime Achievement.
The 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award winners are:
David E. Nichols, PhD, Robert C. and Charlotte P. Anderson Distinguished Chair in Pharmacology and a Distinguished Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Purdue University and Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
Susan C. Winckler, BS, JD, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Food and Drug Law Institute (FDLI), a nonprofit organization committed to providing a marketplace for discussing global food and drug law issues through conferences, publications and member interaction.
The 2012 Honorary Alumni Award winners are:
Paul W. Abramowitz, PharmD, Executive Vice President/CEO-Designate for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
Jordan L. Cohen, PhD, Vice President for Research and Economic Development at the University of Iowa, a position he assumed after serving eight years as dean of the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy.
The 2012 Osterhaus Medal winners are:
Robert Osterhaus, BSPh, founder of the Osterhaus Pharmacy, which is a leading community clerkship site for the UI College of Pharmacy, and has earned national recognition for its patient-centered approach and emphasis on the pharmacist's role in health care. Osterhaus advanced the pharmacy profession on the national stage by serving on boards of several organizations. He also served four terms in the Iowa legislature, and was the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Iowa in 2012.
Max Eggleston, BSPh, served as a Waverly, Iowa community pharmacist from 1948 to 1984, and owner of the Pharmacy Sales and Management Company from 1984 to 1997. He held leadership roles in the Iowa Pharmacy Association, the Iowa Board of Pharmacy and the College of Pharmacy. He was a founding director of the Iowa Pharmacy Foundation and the Pharmacy Network of Iowa. Eggleston also was involved in several major pharmacy organizations on the national level. He was a volunteer leader in his hometown of Waverly, Iowa.
Thomas Temple, BSPh, MS, was the Executive Vice President and CEO of the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA) from 1980 until 2012. Temple’s leadership has been recognized through receipt of several awards including APhA’s Hugo H. Schafer Award and the Gloria Neimeyer-Francke Leadership Mentor Award, the Medic Alert Outstanding Service Award, the University of Illinois’ College of Pharmacy Alumnus of the Year Award, the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy Alumnus of the Year Award, the University of Iowa Distinguished Alumni Award for Service, and Drake University’s Weaver Medal of Honor.
